Take Action for Health Care Justice

The long wait is finally over!

On Thursday, June 28, 2012, the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act.

Today, we rejoice on behalf of persons who need of health care and for people who have already benefitted from this important law. Simply put, everyone should have health care and the Affordable Care Act moves us ever closer to The United Methodist Church’s historic position that health care is a basic human right. Now is the time to TAKE ACTION to ensure the successful implementation of this law! Opponents from all sides are already working to fill the airwaves with false claims about key provisions of the law.  Even more disturbing, some Members of Congress are continuing their fruitless efforts to repeal and tear down the law, placing political considerations above the common good for all Americans.

Now that the Supreme Court has made its decision, we encourage John 10:10 teams to

  • Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper applauding the Supreme Court decision. See sample letter.
  • Tweet your support using the hashtag: #faith4health
  • Tell your story or the stories of others affected by this decision.
  • Speak about the importance of successful implementation in every state.
  • Write a letter or call your Senators and Representative and let them know that you want them to stop wasting time and allow this law to be fully implemented.

We draw inspiration from the words of the prophet, “Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there?  Why then has the health of my poor people not been restored?” (Jeremiah 8:22)

Implementation is the next step in the struggle for health care justice. Therefore, our calling to ensure health care as a basic human right continues….
