3144.Encounter with Christ in Latin America and the Caribbean

Whereas, the missional initiative Encounter with Christ in Latin America and the Caribbean of the General Board of Global Ministries has achieved the initial goal of $1 million on behalf of our United Methodist partnership in mission with the Methodist churches of Latin America and the Caribbean; and

Whereas, the stated goal of $25 million to constitute the Encounter permanent fund in order to provide earned income for comprehensive mission partnership provides one means of securing resources to undergird a holistic strategy on Latin America and the Caribbean; and

Whereas, the initial success in securing funding for Encounter, and the experience in mission education in sharing the need and opportunities for partnership in witnessing to Christ through the Methodist churches of the region might be utilized in the development of a special program for the region; and

Whereas, the Encounter with Christ initiative seeks to strengthen the unity and shared mission outreach of Methodist churches bound together through the Council of Evangelical Churches of Latin America and the Caribbean (CIEMAL) and the Methodist Church of the Caribbean and the Americas (MCCA); and

Whereas, the VIII General Assembly of CIEMAL, meeting in Piracicaba, Brazil, in May, 2003, affirmed the importance of Encounter for the churches of the region, and unanimously agreed to make a special contribution to Encounter and include support for Encounter in the yearly CIEMAL budget;

Therefore, be it resolved, that General Conference celebrate the achievement of reaching the initial goal of $1 million for this missional initiative that was endorsed as a priority for United Methodists by previous General Conference action, express gratitude to a host of supporters, and call upon annual conferences, local churches, and individuals to renew and increase their commitment in order to reach the $25 million goal.
